Associated Press release: League sources state that Texans coach Bill O'Brien has worked out free agent corner back EJ Gaines. Coach O'Brien informed the league offices he intends to sign the free agent corner back but first wants to give the league office a 4th round pick. Coach O'Brien is quoted as saying "This is an excellent deal for us. To get a street free agent like EJ Gaines for only a 4th round is an excellent value." League office officials informed the Texans that they would not need to relinquish a draft pick for an unrestricted free agent. The New England Patriots have allegedly offered to sign Gaines and then immediate trade Gaines to the Texans for two future 4th rounders.
They currently have 12 picks the next two drafts (+ compensatory picks); you're acting like they have none. Watson is signed through the '21 season; Tunsil thru the '20 season. Mercilus & Reader made ~$8MM combined this year. They're going to get big raises but, you know, not, like, $80MM so... I think they'll be OK, cap-wise, especially considering it's expected to go up. They've won 15 of their last 23 regular season games, which is both a positive and decidedly not average. I can't be responsible for you refusing to buy into any of it.
Both Watson and Tunsil are likely to get raises next year. If they wait on Tunsil, that means he hits the open market. Watson is eligible for an extension after this season, and it would be dumb to wait. They could delay the big money until after 2020, but not clear they will or that it's necessarily advantageous to do so. The talk is mahomes will get an extension after this year around $40m per year average (again 2020 could be lower) and Watson will get something similar since Deshaun is actually better. I don't think mercilus will be that expensive, but reader will be. They also need to sign two starting corners, starting te, starting RB. And they won't be able to fill many holes with the draft.
Again, this where u don’t understand NFL contracts. Teams do not rip up old contracts, the extend. Teams will exercise the 5th option on both contracts. Any extension will start after that. The players have no choice or say in that (its in the CBA). That why JJ Watts’ contract is so long.
The pick(s) are for the previous year. The contract Honey Badger signed my entitle the Texans to 2, not just 1 3rd round pick. Jackson signing in Denver is canceled out by signing Roby. Covington will probably get the Texans to a 6 rounder.

Teams do rip up old contracts. There are multiple examples of this. Look at the extensions for Garoppolo or Goff. They weren't just added to the end of the rookie option years

Texans didn't do it with Watt, they probably won't do it with Watson/Tunsil. Why? The players will get Money at Signing, which usually more that $20 million for the large contracts.
They've built a contending team; they will have upwards of $90MM in space; they will have 6 (maybe more) draft picks. Please stop repeating this nonsense that they have crippled their future. It has no basis in reality. It might not be optimal; it might have longer-term ramifications. But the short-term will be OK.
