https://nypost.com/2019/10/18/liz-warrens-no-1-problem-the-us-economy-is-doing-well/ excerpt: A Marist poll asked voters whether “the economy is working well for you personally.” Nearly two-thirds of Americans said yes. This includes large majorities in almost every demographic group. Sixty-seven percent of college graduates and 64 percent of those without a college education say the economy is working for them. So do 68 percent of whites, and 61 percent of nonwhite people. So do Americans of every generation: 63 percent of Generation Z and millennials; 69 percent of Generation X; 63 percent of baby boomers; and 69 percent of Greatest Generation and Silent Generation voters. So do most voters in every type of American community: 63 percent of both big- and small-city voters; 64 percent of small-town voters; 66 percent of rural voters; and 72 percent of suburban voters. Most everyone, it seems, says the economy is working for them. The only groups who disagree are progressives (59 percent), Democratic women (55 percent) and those who are liberal or very liberal (55 percent). So, when Warren declares that President Trump is “part of a corrupt, rigged system that has helped the wealthy and the well-connected and kicked dirt in the faces of everyone else,” it resonates with almost no one except those on the political left.
Basically the biggest hurdle the Dems have to overcome next year...if the economy doesn't falter, a lot of folks may just check the old Trump box.
"Why Aren't More Democrats Endorsing Warren?" https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-arent-more-democrats-endorsing-warren/ excerpts: But this cycle, the overwhelming majority of congressional Democrats and Democratic governors are still on the sidelines. Indeed, the 2020 Democratic primary looks more like the 2016 Republican primary, when most GOP officials held their fire until deep into the race, than that year’s Democratic race. . . . Warren has two obvious problems with party elites. First, there is the perception among some of them that her left-wing stands, such as Medicare for All, are too risky for the general election and decrease the party’s chances of defeating President Trump. . . . Secondly, electoral considerations aside, there is a center-left wing of the Democratic Party that fundamentally disagrees with Warren’s more leftward positions. . . . Warren also has a third challenge with party elites that is less obvious. The Massachusetts senator clashed with senior aides to President Obama for much of his tenure in the White House. She, like Sanders, isn’t quite in line with the party’s establishment. A Warren administration would probably be less likely to hire former Clinton (Bill and Hillary) and Obama aides in key posts than, say, a Biden, Booker or Harris one. So people connected with the party establishment (like many DNC members) may be fine with Warren but prefer other candidates for more self-interested reasons. *** The potential danger for the Massachusetts senator is that "party elites lukewarm about Warren" turns into "party elites organize to stop Warren." And perhaps Democratic voters care more about the views of their party’s elites than Republican voters did in 2016.
Looks like one of our local "moderate Democrats but not a mistake-in-chef supporter" is starting to worry about Warren.
Exactly -- continued growth in the economy is a big asset for Trump and therefore a hurdle for any Democratic challenger, not just Warren. The irony is that re-election should be a completely foregone conclusion with this economy but Trump's weaknesses make it a race. A Democrat is not going to win on the economy. But that doesn't mean they're not going to win.
I could deal with a position or two that I find impractical, but at this point with her I've lost count.
I like Warren and her resume but not necessarily who policies. I have no issue voting for her as I know Congress won’t roll over to her like they did for Trump.
I've never understood single issue voters or those who allow a single issue to determine their vote. It is the equivalent of supporting Mussolini because he made the trains run on time or supporting our current mistake-in-chief because the economy is good. You don't have to agree with everything a candidate represents to be a supporter.
People are generally selfish, the economy almost has NOTHING to do with the President but most are too ignorant of how it actually works to vote for their own self interests. People frankly are just ill informed - and too busy to care. DD
Warren, leading the polls in Iowa, just released her plans to pay for "Medicare for All" that do not increase taxes for the Middle class https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/01/elizabeth-warren-releases-plan-to-pay-for-medicare-for-all.html Warren’s campaign says it will shift the burden of most health care costs from consumers, in the form of spending such as premiums, deductibles and co-pays, to federal and state governments and employers. Here are some of the methods Warren’s campaign outlines to cover the plan’s costs, in terms of both reducing spending and raising money: A new employer Medicare contribution to raise $8.8 trillion, which the campaign says would save companies $200 billion relative to what they would have shelled out under the current system For employers offering health care under a collective bargaining agreement, Warren’s plan would allow them to cut their Medicare contribution “if they pass along savings to workers in the form of increased wages, pensions or other collectively-bargained benefits.” Cutting administrative costs by scrapping private insurers Negotiations to reduce drug spending Better enforcement of existing tax laws to raise $2.3 trillion more in revenue Taxes on “the financial sector, large corporations and the top 1% of individuals.” Changes in taxes on the investing community and large companies could raise an estimated $3.8 trillion, according to Warren’s campaign. Warren appeared to take her proposed wealth tax further under the health care plan, saying wealth over $1 billion would be taxed at 6% rather than the currently proposed 3%. The change would raise an additional $1 trillion, the campaign said. Overall, Warren’s campaign estimates that it can take in $3 trillion for the health care plan by “asking the top 1% of households in America to pay a little more.” $400 billion more in tax revenue through immigration reform Eliminating the Overseas Contingency Operations military fund to save about $800 billion over a decade
Elizabeth Warren is a duplicitous, unscrupulous opportunist. From using every scrap of victimhood to being a conservative till she goes to liberal Harvard and then identifies as a minority at Harvard. Now she just went full communist. Who knows what she really believes?? That of course is typical of most politicians as the only real core belief they have is in their own desire for power.
A single-payer system is not communist, some of the other ideas are a bit a of stretch financially but that is the one thing I believe most Americans would like to see implemented.
Her proffesion at Harvard was a professor specializing in bankruptcy law. I don't think she needed any "woke" additives in her background for such a dry subject matter. She wasn't teaching gender studies at Harvard. Also, do you understand that her elder relatives brainwashed her as a child into believing they have some Native American ancestry? Her grandmother had her do ****ing Native American arts and crafts as a child. It was pretty deeply ingrained. It wasn't some one off thing her mom once said and she just used it as a opportunist. So no,no think she genuinely believed she had some Native American ancestry but never used it as a way to gain employment into prestigious universities. One, if a university employs her because she is some "woke" hire that doesn't have the merit, she wouldn't be chosen to teach dry nuanced subject matter that is necessary in a law school curriculum but rather she would be selected for some easy obscure elective type course. Second, she applied to her first position at an elite institution by applying for a professor position at UPenn Law and there is documented evidence that she only selected "Caucasian" in her application and she got in. Also, she has never even once remotely suggested that her and her family as victims that relative to actual tribe affiliated Native Americans.
you do know that non-communist countries such as Canada, UK, Switzerland, Sweden, and many others, have single-payer health care systems, no? that captures the essence of the trust-fund baby DJ Trump, who had already inherited a million $ by age 8,
What i love about the 'big government solves everything' people is that the government gets involved and makes things worse and then the government must step in more as prices are higher and outcomes are worse! Healthcare and Education has been the most regulated, controlled industry with much of the capital being from the government and having controls in nearly every bureaucratic process. And with all this government intervention in healthcare what have we achieved? Insane inflation in healthcare and education prices with terrible outcomes. Get government out of the way and let the consumer decide and competition will drive prices down and companies will fight for customers.
Yes UK and Canada are the economic miracles of the world. In the 1940's when the National Institute of Health in the UK was created interestingly enough no new hospitals were built for 25 years. The number of patient beds went down while the number of administrative officials skyrocketed. Elective procedures included such 'non-critical' issues as heart bypass surgery. That is government inefficiency for you.
UK is an economic disaster hanging on the its 18th century glory mainly due to letting politicians and bureaucrats rule and pushing entrepreneurs and businesspeople that actually create jobs out of the country and taxing the hell out of them. Switzerland is a silly example as it has a small very rich population from all over the world and Sweden is tiny country with a healthy population the size of New York city.
