Didn't he create the KKK and then turn his back on it? Maybe that day could be used to remind racists that even the founder of one of the most vile organizations in the US called for it to disband and worked to embrace the black community. I would guess he died in a pool of shame and regret, and just to be clear I don't want him to be forgiven for anything he did. He did great evil in his life.
On one hand, "flyover states" is used as a pejorative, but some of these states have so little to offer in terms of history and tradition that their folk heroes and "patriots" are lovely figures like these. If alcohol and prescription pain killers are past times to make people forget, obviously it's not doing its job to forget long enough. Aim higher.
Can’t blame the governor on this one (although he could spearhead the effort to change the law), its a ridiculous law. “Per state law, the Tennessee governor is tasked with issuing proclamations for six separate days of special observation, three of which, including the July 13 Forrest Day, pertain to the Confederacy. Lee — and governors who have come before him — are also required by state law to proclaim Jan. 19 as Robert E. Lee Day, honoring the commander of the Confederate Army, as well as June 3 Confederate Decoration Day, otherwise known as Confederate Memorial Day and the birthday of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.”
He came out and said he has not looked at changing the law... Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signs bill to celebrate Confederate general, slave trader and KKK member https://abcnews.go.com/US/tennessee...top-celebrating-confederate/story?id=64311086
Conservatives, too https://www.tennessean.com/story/ne...ee-governor-bill-lee-proclamation/1722704001/
More like erase losers. The confederacy contributed nothing but funny money and a lot of dead young men.
To be fair they contributed cotton, produce, and livestock as well... oh and enslaving other human beings based on their race.
What if he didn't - would he be impeached? Or imprisoned? And frankly would it matter? Just following orders is what makes atrocities possible. We know which side of the firehose this guy is on in Alabama in the 60's. His excuse is weak ****. He should resign. The Tennessee Titans should never play another game there. This should be become a big thing.
If the law *requires* that the governor do this, why even have the governor as part of the process? What is the point of having him involved if he has no autonomy? Isn't this the whole point of having an executor like the President/Gov who "signs" things? So that individuals can exercise personal discretion?
Just curious why this is the year everyone is up in arms about this when it has been going on for a while
Because previously we had all agreeed that this kind of **** was beyond the pale. Like basically the last 50 years or more. I understand that pro Confederate/white supremacy advocates have been doing this since then. I consider that "haters gonna hate" to put it very, very. Mildly There is no point in declaring a KKK founders day any more so than there is in declaring an SS founders day or a Turkish Arnenian Genocide Genociders day And if you're still doing it in 2019, you're doing it because of racist incel bullshit **** the people who are doing that. Ironically when i was younger, i thought morality and ethics and just being a decent person was a construct. As i get older. I realize it was a great thing regardless Why now? Does it really need to be stated? Cause the now is not like anmy previous now. So to state it succinctly - curious as to why people are on edge about wannabe goose stepping ****ers in control? Because they and their fat Forehead ****ers are in control. Its a ****ing nightmare and we should not become immune to this.
People were always up in arms, but the local ones were too busy trying to not get killed while asking for voting, housing, education and legal rights.
