It's not a talking point, it's history. If you want to talk about "Democratic Socialism" the last example of that will come up. Fortunately there haven't been any more recent examples of "Democratic Socialism" because again, it literally always leads to mass murder and starvation.

I'm sure you know that, which is why you haven't pointed to a socialist success story, there simply has never been one. When pushed for a socialist success story, you guys always point to capitalist countries.

If you weren't pushing such a monstrous ideology, I might feel sorry for you trying to defend the indefensible.

It's also history that capitalism has lead to slavery and child laborers...why the flip are corporations making money off of prisoners again?

We've had this discussion before, you employ the "No True Scotsman" method, tirelessly.

No point in having it again. All I know is when AOC talks about 70% taxes and free Healthcare...Crying VENEZUELA isn't going to work. I know you htink it's a clever talking point, but it really isn't.

    "YOU KNOW VENEZUELA, RIGHT?"

Mmkay. You know China, right? The country where the state owns the businesses and banks?

    Couple of things here,

    1. Slavery and child labor are nowhere near the equivalent horrors to what socialism has brought to the world

    2. Capitalism also ENDED slavery AND child labor.

    3. Pointing out that you try to pass off capitalist countries as the best you can come up with as a successful socialist country isn't an example of "No true Scotsman". the old tactic of ignoring all of the failures of socialism by declaring literally every example of socialism "not true socialism" would be an example of that. You just aren't going to get away with factually inaccurate statements killer.

Not to break the flow of the conversation . . . but apparently AOC is having a hard time accomplishing what other freshmen are doing. She blames the government shutdown. Here's her hometown newspaper reporting:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/22/nyregion/aoc-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-district-office.html

Ocasio-Cortez Builds a National Platform, but a District Office? Not Open Yet

In three short weeks in office, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has shaped a national conversation on taxation, emerged as the face of a green jobs plan in Washington and elevated her initials into a worldwide brand.

But she has not yet opened an office in her own New York City district — a delay that may give a sense of her priorities early in her tenure.

During an appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on Monday, she blamed the government shutdown.

“There’s a lot of things we can’t do as freshmen members,” she told Mr. Colbert as they ate spoonfuls of ice cream. “We can’t properly set up our district offices. We can’t get laptops delivered. We can’t start doing the work that we were elected here to do.”

“It takes the green stuff,” she said. “And those workers are furloughed.”

But the shutdown has not had a similar effect on other first-term Congress members from New York State.

Of the four who took office on Jan. 3, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is the only one who has yet to open a district office. (A fifth freshman, Representative Joseph Morelle, has also opened a local office, but he took office in November after a special election and therefore had more time.)

“We haven’t really run into any issues via the shutdown,” said Jonas Edwards-Jenks, a spokesman for Max Rose, a Democratic representative from Staten Island. Mr. Rose unseated a Republican incumbent, Dan Donovan, and moved into Mr. Donovan’s former district office. “We took that office over and were able to have that open on Day 1,” said Mr. Edwards-Jenks.

The shutdown did not stop Representative Antonio Delgado from opening his first local office in Kingston, N.Y., within two weeks of taking office. Nor did it stop Anthony Brindisi, a freshman representative in upstate New York, from opening two offices.

“No issues due to the shutdown,” said Macey Matthews, a spokeswoman for Mr. Brindisi. “Our Binghamton office opened on Jan. 3, and our Utica office officially opened yesterday,” she said in an email last week.

District offices often function as one-stop service centers for constituents, and in Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s district, the congresswoman’s staff would have been able to help with imminent problems like deportation and more mundane concerns like airplane noise from nearby La Guardia Airport.

Instead, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter on Tuesday that constituents have been redirected to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s office since “prior to our swearing-in,” and that she was thankful for “continued assistance” from the senator’s office.

    1. Not really. Free Healthcare really isn't that terrifying.

    2. We still have slaves. Again, why do corporations get to make money off of prisoners again? Why do we even have for-profit prisons?

    3. Actually, it's the other way around, you're trying to pass socialist countries off as capitalism and you claim outright socialist policies as capitalism because you can't argue against them. In fact, all you have is "You know Venezuela right!??!" this is why AOC continues to win over people and Bernie as well, when the other sides only argument is "VENEZUELA" well, it's not a very strong argument.

She's got this wrong, technically. If the headline only has the word zero in quotes ("zero" f*cks), then that is the only word that they quoted from her. It's not really a misquote.

On the other hand, a lot of publications ran with that exact headline, and the majority of readers aren't going to understand that, and think she said "I give zero f*cks" on TV. And they knew that.

    1) say something controversial
    2) media freakout
    3) meta- media freakout (media commenting on media)

This stuff works. I appreciate her putting things into conversation that never would have otherwise. Here we are, discussing a %70 marginal tax bracket on earned income over 10 mil, sites are creating videos and memes to explain marginal tax rates, and that wouldn't have happened otherwise.

You simply don't know enough about what you are talking about to discuss this with you. If you think the Nordic countries are socialist rather than capitalist when obviously they are capitalist welfare states then you aren't fit to have this conversation. The level of ignorance you are displaying is why a knuckle dragging simpleton like AOC got elected....but will probably become a 1 term congresswoman because even extreme ignorance has its' limits.

Nordic countries are what we call a MIXED ECONOMY. I know you're ignorant about it, but they are far more socialist than America is and a lot of the policies they have are the very SAME ones AOC advocates...so for you to whine and cry about how they are not socialist and yet whine and cry about AOC and Bernie copying their model is...well...very Bobby like

But it's just like you to ignore the initial point of China being a largely socialist state and bring in an argument that I said nothing about this entire thread because that's what you do. Dodge points and create strawmen.

The end result of all this whining about "socialism" is that the term is going to be simply an accepted paradigm and a desirable label. The same thing that Steve King (R-Iowa) tried to do for "white supremacy" earlier this month.

It's fine for the @Os Trigonum, Mitch Mc Connell, and the rest of the deplorables to go all in on betraying their country for a petty Russian Gangster and his bumbling racist buffoon - all's fair as long as you get Rapey Brett his rightful place on the bench. That's just perfectly, perfectly fine.

.... but man, impugn the currently broken facsimilie of late stage capitalism and the arrogation of resources to an oligarchy - well that's really a BRIDGE TO SOCIALISM

It's not going to work for people under 35 bros.

They've been dealing with redistribution from them to the greed-encrusted Boomer generation for their whole lives and they have to live in the shitworld that they are leaving them. One of the secrets of AOC's popularity is that people most people agree with her. Even those in diner country.

To make it work like them you need wealth and you need a population to pay for those lovely social programs. You can't implement that when the bottom of the economy is full of people taking and not giving. It wouldn't work in the U.S. because we have too many useless people from an economic stand point.

Keep repeating this and get a time machine and go back to 1987 and you could have a future at the Heritage foundation as a serious intellectual.

...well, whether one wants to live in China or not is irrelevant to the point I was making.

And this is why AOC will win.

Telling poor people that they are takers and useless is definitely a winning strategy you guys have over there. As if these people don't work full time jobs just to live in a box apartment as they try to pay off 100K college debt...because this idea that poor people just sit around doing nothing just isn't true. They work but they get little pay for it, prices rise and wages stay stagnant and no one can afford anything and the disparity between rich and poor continues to grow...which historically is a key ingredient for a violent revolution...

Yea... must be hard to deny the accusations of racism when republicans put out "jokes" like this. But I am sure the local republican leadership apologized... hmm, I guess not.

He's coming very close, I am sensing a breaking point for @Bobbythegreat very soon as Trump's already-bad approval rating plummets and impeachment looms.

It might have taken several years, but I see a "We got him!" party in our future.
