Great deal, good young, versatile bat. Will miss Marwin's leadership (and switch hitting, maybe we still get a lefty bat or go in-house for that) though, but understandable. Glad to see we're clearing out our "excess" from AAA ahead of the Rule 5 Draft. I think we won the trade before the next season even started.
Good deal for the Astros. Hopefully the Marlins learn their lesson. They give Yelich away for almost nothing and wasted the Astros time on Dietrich. Glad we have moved on. Diaz is a better fit at less cost. To those worried about Diaz’ defense at SS, Marwin wasn’t good at short last year.
I wouldn’t read too much into it. The Astros have targeted a bat and higher end starter... that isn’t going to change.
As a Blue Jays fan, I like this deal for you guys. The Jays had a glut of middle infielders, I think Diaz has some real potential, maybe he breaks out for you guys. The only negative is his defensive numbers, just never looks 100% comfortable out there.
Seems like, at least on paper. a steal. Get a major leaguer who will be a decent replacement for Marwin in exchange for a guy who seemed like was AAA filler.
This could be a prelude to another trade. You could see Yuli being moved or even White. You never know?
1. Realmuto/Ramos 2. Stassi 3. Gurriel 4. Altuve 5. Bregman 6. Correa 7. Diaz 8. White 9. Reddick 10. Springer 11. Tucker/Straw/FA 12. Marisnick/Kemp/Straw 13. Marisnick/Kemp/Straw Infield is awesome! I can see anyone getting a day as DH among the six infielders. Gurriel can play 2B/3B, Diaz can play all 4 spots, White has time at first and second, etc
Considering they ran with 13 pitchers the majority of last year, the odds of them wanting to carry 11 seem remote.
Great move to get a replacement for Marwin but does make me a little sad that this all but guarantees Marwin is gone... he has been a huge part of what we do and I wish him the best!
Very true... Luhnow is going to stick to his guns and still build his team the way he always has. It’s what got us this far.
This has Scott Boras written all over it. The asking price for Marwin is astronomical and which is why I think Altuve low-balled himself, or didn't wait until free-agency so he can be Astros for life. Boras wanted to use Altuve like Harper ride the season until free-agency. I like our Stros GM to be proactive instead of reactive. Margo is going to take a major pay cut from Boras' numbers to be an Astros. No better backup plan, or no better statement to Boras than trading for Diaz.
