Speaking of Reagan, many people remember the poetic phrase "a shining city on a hill", wonderful imagery of how people both in and outside of America see our country. Here the full passage:

But earlier in that same address, Reagan said the following:

"Together, tonight, let us say what so many long to hear: that America is still united, still strong, still compassionate, still clinging fast to the dream of peace and freedom, still willing to stand by those who are persecuted or alone.

For those who seek the right to self-determination without interference from foreign powers, tonight let us speak for them,

For those who suffer from social or religious discrimination,

For those who are victims of police states or government induced torture or terror,

    For those who are persecuted,

For all the countries and people of the world who seek only to live in harmony with each other, tonight let us speak for them."

Don't see any mention of merit in those words either.

Ireland was once looked upon as a "s**thole" country by many here, and Irish immigrants were often looked down upon. Mr. trump is a deeply ignorant person.

Is the poll/thread title disconnect (yes to one = no to the other) purposeful? Or is it the work of a very stable genius?

What effect would stopping immigration from those countries have on population growth, and, by extension, economic growth, in the US? What effect would it have on supply on low-skilled labor, whether manual or service?

It's pretty to think that we should only accept immigrants with special skills that are difficult or impossible to match from within our population, only those that are capable of attaining well-paying jobs, only those that will make enough to require no government assisstance, but that's not reality. In reality, the world needs ditch diggers, and ditch digging pays ****. In reality, we need our population to grow and since it isn't growing from within it must grow from without. In reality, people with desirable skills, with pretty backgrounds, and from non-**** hole countries have no need to emigrate and their desire to emigrate is wanning with each passing day that President Stable Genius is in office.

All that said, I thought that most legal immigrants from **** hole countries already possess desirable skills?

Evolving suggests moving forward. I think the word you were looking for was regress.

    What's not working about it?

Don't know if you mean it or only say it as a rhetorical flourish, but I'm down.

He married a wealthy white fashion model from Slovenia so he's not racist. Ha. BTW, what part of Africa is Slovenia in? Just can't find it on my map. Thanks.

    You are a parody account.

Uh, however you want to classify Slovenia, there is ample evidence that this man is a racist. Ample before he was a candidate. Ample after he was a candidate. And ample since he was elected. Good lord, give us all a break with this "not a racist" crap. Even his filth-carriers know it. He just doesn't like brown people.

Trump is a racist. If you apologize for him, and still support him... you support racism. It’s just that simple.

I think your statement makes sense from an economic perspective ... And I obviously think that our governments obligation should be towards people that are already citizens.

But I think it is difficult to accurately "value" what it is they can provide .

On the one hand , certainly being skilled and qualified for high level jobs is one measure of value.

But there are so many intangibles that come. You could come to this country and never get past being a janitor . Your kids could benefit tremendously from the US education system and other "handouts" . But even though you work a low paying job who knows what good you did . Maybe you made an impact on your co-workers lives. Maybe you instilled the value of hard-work in your children and they go on to create tons of "value" for the US .

Many successful doctors and engineers and key professionals to our society are 2nd or 3rd generation immigrants whose parents came to the country and worked menial jobs.

I think the process of providing value can happen in so many ways and over a huge time horizon . So while admitting skilled professionals is one way to ensure you get something back from the "transaction" .... I think it's also shortsighted .

    1. Have you ever been to Slovenia? It’s pretty nice there. Speaking from personal experience.

    2. He didn’t mention any EU countries only African countries and Haiti. Interesting isn’t it?

    3. How are comments like this good diplomatic strategy for USA?

You want the best breed of people. Importing skilled professionals with enough money and proper skin color is one way... How about the cleansing of those(I would never say shithole) who are already in the country since centuries ago? No one has ever given the president this idea?

    Make American Reich Great Again.
