This baseball player has ruled out the Astros for non-baseball reasons. Close this thread or at the very least move it out of Astros sub. Maybe the hangout so we can discuss sushi and lovely Japanese Americans. Basically discuss everything except baseball.
Getting Ohtani to 400 PA is pretty easy for any team. If he goes to an AL team, he DH’s 2/3 the games he doesn’t pitch. If he goes to an NL team, he hits when he pitches plus plays RF 2 days per week when the matchup favors it (30g as a pitcher, 60g as a OF).
So happy that the he is not on the Astros list. If Aoki was on the team, we may have a chance despite Gurriel's childish fun. We got to take care of our players first before we take care of potential.
Ohtani is essentially free. There was no conflict between getting Ohtani and taking care of current Astros. If anything, Ohtani had a chance to make it easier to keep the core together as the Astros likely would need one less starting pitcher. Starting pitching isn't usually cheap.
We sign Ohtani. We will have too much spotlight on him than this past immortal season. We will be talking about every starts and every Japanese writers will ask about Ohtani than the Astros And If you know about Japanese personality, they aren't in the mold of Keuchel, Devo, Verlander, McCullers or Giles. Players that demand the ball and aren't soft. We have to pay his salary and $20 million fee to the Japanese club. To me that is too much for a player that you can prospect in the draft.
People will talk about high potential players whether they're Japanese, Cuban, Dominican, or American. He was being pursued by the Astros but they lost out, probably due to geography. One of the dude's wants was to be on a team that doesn't currently have a Japanese player so not having Aoki on the team was a plus for this guy. Damn, busting out that Asian "soft" stereotype? Thought we were done with that crap after Yao made Barkley kiss a donkey's ass but I guess not.
While I'm not as high on him as others...this is just silly. Who cares about where the spotlight is? You have no idea what his mental makeup is and if he's going to demand all the attention. Also, if he is as good as some thing he will be, you cannot "prospect in the draft" a guy that's going to be a major league caliber starting pitcher AND designated hitter. There is literally 1 available right now in the entire world.
YIKES. I hope you don't speak like this in public and you should be ashamed of yourself just for texting it. BTW, a 32 year old isn't child.
You do realize you can just not click on the thread, right? You can always also start an "Every Japan" thread in the hangout if you'd like. These things are not mutually exclusive.
I come check the Astros sub looking for news and only see this being updated when at this point it has nothing to do with Astros or baseball apparently. Just trying to suggest some law and order here.
Thank goodness you're here. First it's slightly misplaced thread discussions, then its rape and murder.
Maybe he saw the career Ichiro had and wants to run things on his terms in a dim spotlight that allows him to grow without pressure.
And possibly go his entire prime missing the postseason. This isn't the NBA. One great player can't elevate the franchise(Mike Trout). The Padres have been a poor organization for a while. I do admire his mindset to do things his way, but promising yourself to that team for 6 seasons could backfire. Will be easy to pitch in that ballpark though.
