Turner Field lasted 20 years...Georgia Dome lasted 25. Holy crap, Atlanta...build something that's gonna last longer.
Replacing the Georgia Dome made a lot of sense. The city co tributed 250 million and got a billion dollar stadium which was designed for football and soccer and the reason that Atlanta got a MLS team. They’ll also get a few rounds of high profile sports events: Super Bowl, College Playoff Championship, Final Four Turner field was pretty lame. At lease they can turn it into a football stadium for Georgia St.
I had the feeling the implosion of the Georgia Dome would lead to more talk about taking out the Astrodome. There are some key differences though between the Astrodome and the Georgia dome. The Astrodome is a very strong structure built at a time when overengineering was the norm. The Georgia Dome is much more modern but that also means that technology allowed it to be less overbuilt. From what I've heard is that the Astrodome can't be imploded because its structure is both strung and redundant so the amount of explosives would be prohibitive.
There is nothing wrong with the quality of the build of the facilities. In terms of the Olympics, the Braves claim Turner Field had more infrastructure support than it needed for a baseball stadium since it was originally built to accommodate 85,000 people and thus resulted in higher annual operational costs even after it was converted for their use. That's one of many reasons they said they needed a new stadium. Like I said, that still seems a little lame but the new football stadium made more sense. Turner Field will continue as the stadium for the Georgia St football team and be the center of a massive redevelopment complex.
The Astrodome is a historical engineering marvel that transcends sports. We must keep it up for as long as possible. This has nothing to do with sports.
It's not going anywhere. They are starting work next summer to raise the floor to add parking and renovate it for exhibit space.
I voted for all referendums on building stadiums/arenas with public dollars in Houston. But they are terrible investments of public money.
LOL @ comparing the Georgia Dome to the 8th Wonder. Every other stadium that's been demolished has better reason to have been demolished.
The only reason the Dome hasn't been demolished is because: 1) they were still paying for it a few years ago. 2) its right next to NRG stadium.
Supposedly they can't do standard implosion because of how close it is to NRG. That along with the threat of asbestos means the demolition will cost 2X as much as t would regularly cost.
I am not saying it has to be the Astrodome, but at some point Houston needs to start preserving some of it's history and past. The city is great and offers many things, but there isn't a lot of foot prints to the past and as someone that has lived everywhere, that starts to matter. Houston isn't a very old city and hasn't been a large city for very long compared to places like NYC or CHI or LA. As a result it doesn't have the type of historical stories of those places. However, I don't agree that Houston doesn't have a personality. It has a very strong personality that has been even more rapidly developing the last 25 years.
Describe Houston's personality. I was saying "little-to-no", not just "no". The San Jacinto Monument and restaurants are nice, but those things aren't discussed nationally or even within the State.
