Joe Carter said he would want nothing to do with Ken Giles fastball, and Rickey Henderson took credit for that too.
Somewhere within this thread, or another thread, there's a funny little exchange between myself and @CometsWin (or somebody else) regarding the absolute dread of watching Giles attempt to close out a game in a high-stakes setting... such as a playoff game at Fenway Park. Good stuff! Part of what makes this team that much more gratifying is that they weren't necessarily a finished product... they've grown to this level, Giles included.
This was vintage Giles. Gives up a run to make it interesting, but in the end, he gets the save. I guess we've gone from Lights Out Lidge to Jerk Us Around Giles.
We supposed to have one of the best defensive OF in MLB but the last few games it was a letdown. Springer made 2 bad judgements on 2 fly balls the last 2 games, by his own standard, those are errors. Reddick "fumbled" a ball out of his gloves resulting in a 3 run homers, by his standard, that's an error. Marvin also had a bad jump on a fly ball, by his standard, that could happen but that ball definitely is catchable. Our OF needs to be more solid than the last 2 games, Giles actually is better than we should expect him to be.
those were in no way easy catches by springer and reddick. I guess our OF has become that good that they are expected to make those plays apparently
Those are no easy catches for normal outfielders. But Springer clearly misjudged both flyballs, if he will play it safe and wanted to catch it bounce off the wall, I have no problem with it. Especially the one in the 9th inning yesterday, you are up by 2, hold him to a double should be the right mind set.
This is entirely wrong. I don't think he misjudged the ball in the 9th--that's a tough play and he was close. And a holding him to a double when up by [edit] 2--and no one on--should NOT be the mindset. It should've been to get the out if he had a legitimate chance at it...which he did.
have no problem with what he did in the 9th inning. springer went for it and almost got a very difficult ball with the wall very much being a factor. expect nothing less from him.
I don't think people realize how far left Springer had to go. It LOOKS like it's to dead center field - but watch again and pay attention to the Red Sox's logo (which IS in center field) - it was hit to the left of that. He ran a mile and still damn near made the play. As is, it was Marvin; er, uhm - Marwin who fielded the ball, not Reddick. And I agree; you don't play for the double and bring the tying run to the plate. As with the Verlander decision, you play game 4 with all the urgency you can muster because game 5s (or 7s) suck.
I screencapped it: I really do want to know where Reddick was? I guess he was playing the line with a LH? Still, I can't believe his path would've been farther than Marwin's.
And, I agree. Trying to get the out and eventually giving up the HR meant nothing with a 2 run lead in the context of the game.
