I wonder if Trump miscalculated the economic pressure his comments could make. I think he was thinking that his sentiments would be echoed by football fans; and owners, not wanting to lose fans, would incrementally shun the protesting players come contract time, reducing their earning power and putting a chilling effect on political speech from professional athletes. Instead, what seems to be happening is that the NFL recognizes that football fans will have a hard time not watching and are instead concerned that, come contract time, the players will shun their team if they say the wrong thing. Owners have no choice but to show solidarity with the players against Trump or run the risk that players will go to more politically-friendly rivals. And even if fans love the stand the owner takes to 'honor our heritage' they still won't spend dollars because the team won't be competitive.
I think you'll see people stop watching. It's already had an impact even before this weekend. Owners have no choice but to defend players for fear of being labeled a racist (ridiculous, but true), but the net result will be fewer people watching and caring about the NFL.
