Pretty sure that could be said of every #1 bust in every sport ever... at the time, seemed like a slam-dunk decision. Oden over Durant was defensible at the time. Bowie over Jordan was defensible at the time. David Carr being picked #1 was defensible at the time.
I think he was suggesting that since we got the extra high pick the following season, it's not as if that situation didn't result in value. Just maybe a little embarrassment.
Except those picks ended up disasters and have nothing to do with what I said. Part of the value of the number 1 pick in MLB is that if you can't sign the player, you get the number 2 overall the next year. Astros got Bregman.
Thank goodness for our doctors and Aiken's pride to reject the offer. It did work out alright for us. Really in hindsight the only thing that could be a decent alternative is Rodon and Nix.
From his dad: Well a sad day today as Colby's hip just wouldn't heal and I'm not sure he wanted to have another surgery on it. Playing in the big leagues is a tough gig and Colby's body has taken a beating. So he's saying goodbye to Major League Baseball. Man it's sure been fun watching him play. 8 plus years and 165 home runs for a skinny kid from Phenix city Alabama just isn't too bad. Colby won a little league national championship, a Dixie World Series championship, a high school national championship and got a World Series ring for his time with the cardinals during the year they won it all. Pretty good baseball career. We still have Cory Rasmus rehabbing and trying to get in shape for another run at the big leagues next spring and I guess it's time to get to work with Ryker and Kreed Rasmus. Next stop little league World Series...⚾️. I'll have to get back in little league coaching mode.
Checking in on some former Astro farm hands: Harold Arauz was just promoted to AA. Rio Ruiz floundered in the majors but has hit well in AAA. Folty has an era under 4 but hasn't been that great; on a pretty good run though. Mark Appel is hurt. Tom Eshelman has dominated AAA. Jacob Nottingham has a 114 wRC+ in AA. Daniel Mengden is hurt. Jorge Guzman is throwing very well in low A. Albert Abreu is hurt. Jarred Cosart is hurt. He's sucked with the Padres. Kike Hernandez has been worth 0.9 fWAR for the Dodgers this season. Adrian Houser is hurt. Domingo Santana has a 129 wRC+ and has been worth 1.9 fWAR for Milwaukee. Brett Phillips hit his first MLB homer today. Josh Hader has an ERA under 1 in 13 IP with Milwaukee. Nolan Fontana has a 119 wRC+ in AAA. Tyler Heineman has been awful in AAA for the Brewers. Jon Villar has a 641 OpS for the Brewers this season. Andrew Aplin has a 123 wRC+ for the Mariners AAA team.
The Rangers may want to acquire Chris Carter https://www.lonestarball.com/2017/7/16/15979324/texas-rangers-rumors-chris-carter-a-ranger-target The question is, is their motivation that they think he will hit home runs for them, or because he knows the secret communications code used by Astros catchers and pitchers?
That trade is a win even if we never get anything out of Martes. Simply getting Cosart off the roster was a good move.
Chris Carter just signed a minor league deal with the A's. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/07/athletics-to-sign-chris-carter.html
