Astros prospect says 'no lady needs to be on ESPN'

A Houston Astros prospect tweeted that “no lady needs to be on ESPN” as he took aim at analyst Jessica Mendoza during Wednesday’s National League wild-card game.

Brooks Marlow, who played for the Class A Lancaster (Calif.) JetHawks last season, soon deleted the tweet and changed his profile picture to a brown dog, but not before the Twitter message was saved for posterity.

“We have communicated with the player, who agreed that this tweet was inappropriate and insensitive and has since apologized,” the Astros said. “We also apologize to Ms. Mendoza, who is an outstanding broadcaster that we have had the pleasure of working with this season.”

A message left with JetHawks spokesperson Jason Schwartz by USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday night was not immediately returned.

Brooks, a 23-year-old second baseman, was drafted in the 29th round by the Astros in 2015. He was born in Giddings, Texas, and played his college ball under Augie Garrido at the University of Texas.

Mendoza, a two-time Olympian as part of Team USA’s softball team, was promoted to a full-time analyst on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball broadcast team in January as part of a reorganization of the cast that coincided with the network dropping controversial former major leaguer Curt Schilling.

Mendoza became the first female analyst for a nationally televised major league playoff game last October as Schilling was benched for a tweet about Muslims that included Adolf Hitler.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised when Yahoo Sports gave me two text alerts on this story. I really don't care what our single-A players are saying social media to be honest. But as a pro athlete in this day and age you have to be way smarter than that.

He hit .205 in Lancaster, he's worried about the wrong Mendoza. I'm sure he'll be a hell of a car salesman in a couple of years.

Her commentary is fine, she's just as good if not better than most of the guys they run out there.
